The pajunas barnraising, day 1

As someone who actively works with open source, I've learned how rewarding it is to work with people smarter than myself to solve interesting problems. So, I put the word out to some of the smartest people I know, and got a great response!

Per-domain bayesian databases in SQL

We store all bayesian and whitelist data for Spamassassin in a PostgreSQL.  Keeping it all in a database like this allows all members of our email cluster to access the same data.

Bayesian processing works by noticing lots of little unique snippets - tokens - and storing them for future reference.   If lots of tokens were found in a message flagged as spam then future messages containing these tokens are more likely to be spam as well.  This has the same weighing effect for non-spam messages.  Over time, watching these tokens increases the quality of your spam detection.

We have been running a SQL-backed bayesian instance for several months, with remarkable results.

good times at minnēbar

It's so exciting to see this many Twin Cities techs in one place! There's a common misconception that the Twin Cities is a pretty far cry from tech central. I have always maintained that we have a very active technical/open source community, it's just that there's not enough cross-pollination.

reporting fraud

Once or twice per month, we receive a hosting request from out-of-state. The names and intentions of the sites are unfamiliar, and there's sometimes missing data, but we receive complete and valid address and credit card information. Invariably, these are fraud victims.

Clarifying objectives

Over the last five years, pajunas interactive has enjoyed an extremely loyal user base. We've never had to do a lot of marketing to get new business, I have mostly just gotten business by being myself and sponsoring user group meetings. This has become the "Allie and her friends" hosting platform, which is just fine by me!
